Frequently Asked Questions

Most all common questions can be found in our Quick Start Guide or Full User Manual, but see below for a few common questions.

How do I calibrate end points?

It’s incredibly straightforward, as a matter of fact there’s a video below walking you through the process!

What model do I have?

You can either press the left arrow from the main screen of the XCTRL to see your model number, or you can look at the sticker either on the stepper motor or the right side of the casting if looking at it when the XCTRL is facing upwards.  Units made since 08/2023 have moved the motor label to the inside wall of the casting right next to the stepper motor.

How do I change automatic operation modes?

To change the automatic operation mode that your actuator is using, press the AUTO button repeatedly until the mode you want is shown.  Once it is shown, press the ENT button to select it

How long does the SuperCap back-up last?

The SuperCap backup is designed to last for one 90° stroke on all models.  Since all models are taken in to account, that means that an X0400 will get a longer SuperCap backup operation than the X5000 due to the 90° cycle time.

Do I have to replace the whole actuator if there’s a problem?

Nope!  The entire actuator only has to be replaced if it’s deemed that the gearbox is defective.  Otherwise the XCTRL and Power Supply modules are easily upgraded or changed in the field.

How do I know if I have a SuperCap?

There are a few ways to check this:

  • Look to see if a five position cable is plugged in to the left side of the XCTRL module
  • Verify your model number.  If the model number the ends with -EPB then you have SuperCap backup
  • Look in the upper right hand corner of the XCTRL screen, if a charge percentage is shown, you have a SuperCap

Video Training

Below are a collection of videos on how to operate and calibrate the SmartStep Actuator.

Feel free to request a certain video if what you need isn’t shown below.

End Point Calibration

This goes over the initial setup needed to set the SmartStep end points.

On-Off Setup

If you have a SmartStep with SuperCap backup (i.e. part number is X0400-PSUNI-EPB) the EPB signifies SuperCap capability.  Having a SuperCap enables this automatic mode of operation.  This explains what that’s all about

XCTRL Module Swap

In the event that your XCTRL is damaged and needs to be replaced, this walks you through the process.  That means that if there is a field failure, you can replace just the control module and not the entire actuator!  If you have an extra one on hand that means no downtime!
